Podcast: Why Every Sales Training Program You’ve Built Has Failed (And What Finally Works)

Janek’s EVP of Technology and Innovation, Greg Smith, was invited to the Enablement Optimization Podcast to discuss how sales enablement is evolving, and why so many traditional training programs have struggled to produce lasting results. For years, enablement has relied on fragmented learning experiences and static LMS courses that sit outside the daily realities of sellers. Today, that model is giving way to a more integrated approach: learning in the flow of work. Instead of one-time, stage-gated training events, modern enablement focuses on delivering timely, relevant support exactly when sellers need it most.

A central theme of the conversation is Janek’s 4P Model, a practical framework designed to embed coaching directly into everyday sales activities. The model emphasizes continuous development across four stages:

  • Prepare: Using tools like automated call planners to structure meetings
  • Practice: Utilizing AI-driven roleplay simulations to refine skills safely
  • Perform: Applying methodologies during actual sales calls
  • Progress: Debriefing and planning future actions based on real-world outcomes

This approach ensures that learning is not an isolated event, but an ongoing cycle tied to real-world performance. Greg also highlights the growing role of AI in this process, not as a replacement for human judgment, but as a tool that provides consistency, structure, and alignment with company strategy when implemented with the right guardrails.

As enablement continues to mature, the role of the enabler is shifting as well. Rather than acting solely as trainers, enablement leaders are becoming orchestrators that leverage data, integrate technology into existing workflows, and support sellers through the “messy middle” of deals where performance is often won or lost. At the same time, top-performing sellers are increasingly taking ownership of their own development. Effective enablement programs recognize this trend, creating environments that empower self-directed learning while ensuring it stays aligned with organizational messaging and goals.

Watch the full conversation to hear Greg’s insights on the future of enablement and how to bring learning directly into the flow of work.
